About Harvard Health Publications:
Harvard Health Publications is a division of
the Harvard Medical School. The goal of all of
our publications is to bring the public, around
the world, the most current practical, authoritative
health information, drawing on the expertise
of the 8,000 faculty physicians at the Harvard
Medical School and its world-famous affiliated
hospitals.
Working with partners in the publishing industry,
Harvard Health Publications publishes information
about health and wellness through all types of
media: newsletters, books and our website (www.health.harvard.edu).
In addition, Harvard Health Publications has
editorial responsibility for one of the world's
largest and most heavily visited consumer health
websites: InteliHealth.
Our mission is to be the world's most widely
recognized and trusted provider of high-quality
information about health.
Harvard Health Publications
Books
We know that medical care has grown more complex
and that the amount of health information available
has increased greatly. We also know that, at the
same time, the face-to-face time people have with
their doctors is increasingly limited. This often
leaves individuals facing many confusing choices.
The faculty physicians who write and edit our books
are practicing doctors who understand the questions
and concerns of patients. Not only do we care for
patients — whether they are suffering from
a nasty cold or require emergency surgery — but
we also teach them how to stay healthy. As a result,
our books offer the latest information, presented
in an innovative and clear manner.
Harvard Medical School publishes books for the
general public on a wide range of health topics,
available in bookstores and online book sellers.
In the past these books were published and distributed
in partnership with Simon & Schuster. Current
and future book releases are published and distributed
in partnership with McGraw-Hill.
The Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide — the
first health guide designed for use in an age of
managed care, and the first to be regularly updated
online — began this publishing program. Published
in October 1999, the book maintains a Web site
of its own on which important new information since
the book was published, and supplemental information
not in the book, can be found. The collaboration
has produced other books including: 6 Steps To
Increased Fertility, and The Arthritis Action Program
and the best-selling Eat,Drink, and Be Healthy.

InteliHealth
The Harvard Medical School-InteliHealth Partnership
In August 2000, Harvard Medical School, one of
the world's preeminent institutions in medical
education and research, became the flagship medical-content
partner of InteliHealth, a subsidiary of Aetna,
Inc. InteliHealth, a founding member of Hi-Ethics
and a URAC accredited health web site, seeks
to empower people with trusted solutions for
healthier lives.
A core editorial faculty of 14 HMS physicians
and one pharmacist works closely with InteliHealth
staff to create new content and to review articles
and other content for clinical accuracy and relevance.
Numerous contributing editors on the medical-school
faculty with expertise ranging from pediatrics
to geriatrics also work with the core
faculty to maintain the highest possible standards
for all content. Material developed specifically
by the medical school is included throughout
the site and is clearly labeled. Selected content
from Harvard Health Publications' books, newsletters,
and special health reports can be found on the
site as well.
In addition, more than 150 top health care organizations
contribute to InteliHealth's content, including
the National Institutes of Health, other government
agencies, major non-profits, other publishers
and news media.
