New health books series: The Harvard Medical School Guide
Need a new book to read on the Kindle you received as a holiday present? I’d like to recommend one or more of the eight just-published eBooks that kick off the Harvard Medical School Guide series. Brief descriptions are below. These books are available for the Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iBooks, and other ebook formats.
Your Brain on Yoga presents compelling scientific evidence about how yoga and meditation can change our brains, and our lives, by reducing stress, strengthening parts of the brain responsible for memory, and providing a sense of peace and calm. Your Brain on Yoga explains how regularly practicing yoga can reduce your heart rate and blood pressure, increase lung capacity, and help treat conditions such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. | If you have a picky eater in your home, you know the daily challenge of planning a healthy diet for him or her. Getting Your Child to Eat (Almost) Anything offers insights into why kids become picky eaters and delivers surprising, simple, and effective solutions to help your child enjoy food and get the nourishment he or she needs. |
Does your child struggle with sleep at night, or with waking up and staying awake during the day? If so, you’re not alone: 20-30% of children of all ages suffer from some form of sleep disturbance. Successful Sleep Strategies for Kids details the latest discoveries science has made in the field of sleep, and offers dozens of proven and effective ways to help your child get a better night’s sleep and be more refreshed and alert during the day. | Almost two-thirds of women have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, or sleep through the night but wake up feeling exhausted. Successful Sleep Strategies for Women presents the latest research about why women have such trouble sleeping, and details proven strategies for falling asleep sooner, sleeping better, and waking up rested. Successful Sleep Strategies for Women covers lifestyle modifications, prescription and over-the-counter medications, and natural remedies. |
Tantrums are a totally normal – though unfortunate – part of early childhood. Most of the time the behavior is mercifully short-lived. Taming Your Child’s Temper Tantrums helps parents see the tantrum from the child’s perspective, offers suggestions for dealing with them, and advice on when to seek professional help. | At one point or another, almost everyone experiences acts of prejudice triggered by age, race, skin color, religion, weight, or other superficial reason. Being subtly ignored, disrespected or treated as a stereotype is hurtful and sometimes shocking, particularly when it comes from someone at work. Overcome Prejudice at Work explains how to cope with these insults and respond constructively to them. |
How do you tap into your skills and talents to lead successfully and take your organization to the next level? CEO Psychology: Who Rises, Who Falls, and Why explores the psychological underpinnings that create great leaders. The book can help you carve a path through the irrational behavior of people in organizations by learning to make sense of and harness your own talents and skills and those of the people who work for you. | Ever wonder what it takes to be a surgeon? The Making of A Surgeon offers a rare glimpse into how surgeons are trained at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, one of Harvard Medical School’s teaching hospitals. This is an inspiring and fascinating story about the young people who make the grade in one of the world’s toughest and most important medical professions. |
