Are you at risk of having a drug resistant UTI?
Increasingly, bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics. In fact, some UTI bacteria may actually be able to flush an antibiotic out of their cells or otherwise evade being destroyed by it.
When they replicate, these bacteria will pass their antibiotic resistance on to their offspring. And when bacteria are less sensitive to antibiotics, it becomes more difficult to fight infections.
That’s why there is a shift toward getting a urine culture for some uncomplicated UTIs: It allows physicians to prescribe a more targeted antibiotic, increasing the chances of successful treatment and decreasing the risk of antibiotic resistance.
And it’s why it’s so important to be aware of the host of ways to help prevent and treat UTIs, now revealed in Harvard’s online guide: Urinary Tract Infection: What you need to know about this common illness
