CDC initiative aims to prevent injuries in older adults
Research we're watching
The CDC wants to help adults over age 65 avoid life-changing injuries. Some 2.4 million people in this age group wind up in the emergency department each year after falls or motor vehicle accidents, which are the most common causes of traumatic brain injuries in this group. The CDC’s Still Going Strong initiative aims to prevent them — while encouraging older adults to stay active.
The initiative recommends simple strategies such as always wearing a seat belt, removing small rugs (a common tripping hazard) from your home, and checking with your doctor to make sure none of the medications you are taking will make you dizzy or drowsy.
